Introduction

Brothers and Sisters!     

Assalam o Alleyykum

    [Peace be Upon You]

Trust is an element where the life revolves around it every moment of life. For example

·       We trust for anything we eat  that it is free from any adulteration and pollution

·       when we are walking  on the road we trust that the car and truck drivers will not hit

·       we trust that employer will reward us when services will be rendered

·       etc.etc

Brothers and Sisters! In other words everyone is a ‘Trustee’ where he is required to honour his duties and responsibilities in amicable manner so that the rights of others are not infringed.

Brothers and Sisters! Head of the state  is the figurehead who has to be honest , integrate , truthful in every respect so that the people can learn to be honest, truthful and trustworthy. The qualities of Head of state defined by Muslim scholar Imam Kholani (RA):

The ‘Politician’ is like a fresh and sweet fountain. The water of this fountain flows in the adjoining canals.

If the people make the water of the canal dirty by taking a bath or otherwise, the fresh and sweet water from the fountain shall replace the dirty element from the canal.

But if the water in the fountain, in itself is dirty, then one cannot find clean water in the canal.

Therefore, the people cannot be reformed unless the ‘Politician’ possesses the qualities which he ought to posses to lead the people towards the ‘Right Course’ which leads to successes in this world and the life hereafter.

Brothers and Sisters! In view of the context and substance of the above definition the people will follow the Right Course  if head of the state is honest, integrate and trustworthy. But if head of the state has shortcomings in his personality and character then these will transmit in the personalities and characters of the people and there will be state of anarchy, unrest and digression in every respect where there is little hope to expect peace  in the world.

Brothers and Sisters! Politics is the factor which requires the element of trust because the object of politics is to look for success of everybody and create environments of Peace and Harmony . On this basis Imam Ghazali (RA) defined politics: 

 ‘Politics’ is to reform public and lead them to the ‘Right Path’ that leads to success in this world and the life hereafter

.

Politics is the ‘Policy’ that creates respect love, affection, unity among the people.

Brothers and Sisters! In view of the context and substance of the above definition the respect, love, affection and unity can only be achieved if the head of the state is intelligent, modest, honest, and integrate and has a kind heart to look after the people of the state.

Brothers and Sisters! The question arises how the element of ‘Trust’ can be developed in one’s personality and character?

Brothers and Sisters! Allah is Creator of mankind. As ‘Trust’ would have been the main factor in the worldly life Allah had proposed to all the Entites (Creations) before determining His (SWT) viceroy that when they will be sent in the world then they have to be trusted. This aspect has revealed in Qur’an:

Translation Surah Al Ahzab Ayat no 72

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

Truly, We did offer Al-Amanah (the trust or moral responsibility or honesty and all that the duties which Allah has ordained) to the heavens and the earth, and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and were afraid of it (i.e. afraid of Allah’s Torment). But man bore it. Verily, he was unjust (to himself) and ignorant (of its results).

Brothers and Sisters! The context and substance of the above Ayat depicts that when man assumed the responsibility of being ‘trustful’ then he entered in covenant with Allah that if he will be trustful then he will live in Paradise forever and if he is untrustworthy then he will have to go to Hell. This aspect is revealed in the Qur’an:

Translation Surah Al Ahzab Ayat no 73

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

So that Allah will punish the hypocrites men and women, and the men and women who are al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers, in the Oneness of Allah, and His Messenger Mohammed (SAW)). And Allah will pardon (accept the repentance of) the true believers of the Islamic Monotheism, men and women. And Allah is Ever Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Brothers and Sisters! The context and substance of the above Ayat depicts that hypocrites and al – Mushrikun are untrustworthy and the true believers are trustworthy.

Brothers and Sisters! In short, to develop the element of Trust in one’s personality and character one has to follow the Guidance of Allah and Teachings of Anbiyya e Karam.

Brothers and Sisters! The reason mankind has digressed from the Right Path   is that heads of states  are no more trustworthy. There is element of hypocrisy in their personality and character because they talk about the promotion of Moral Values but they do not adhere to the components of Moral Values in the Politics of the state. Moral Values are the crux of Guidance of Allah and Teachings of the Anbiyya e Karam (Prophets).

SUBJECT MATTER

Brothers and Sisters! The subject matter is Presidential Elections of USA 2012 where the contestants are:

·       incumbent President Barrack Hussain Obama  and

·        Mitt Romney

Brothers and Sisters! Let us look at the brief profiles of both contestants.

BARRACK HUSSAIN OBAMA

Brothers and Sisters! As below are the salient features of the profile of Barrack Hussain Obama:

Education and Civil Service

·       Graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School where he was president of the Harvard Law Review

·       Community organiser in Chicago before earning his law degree

·       Worked as civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the university of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.

·       Served three terms representing the 13 the District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.

·       He won US Senate Elections in 2004

·       He won US Presidential Elections  in 2008.

·       He earned scholarship where he attended Punahou School, a private Preparatory school from fifth grade until his graduation from high school in 1979.

·       In 1988 he was selected as an editor of Harvard Law Review at the end of his first year and president of the journal in his second year.

·       In 1989 and 1990 he worked as an associate at the law firms of Sidley Austin and Hopkins & Sutter.

·       In 1993 he joined Davis, Miner, Narnhill & Galland, a 13 Attorney Law firm specialising in civil rights litigation and neighbourhood economic development.

·       From 1994 to 2002 he served on the boards of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago.

·       From 1995 to 2002 he served on the board of directors of Chicago Annenberg Challenge as founding president and chairman of the board of directors.

·       In January 2003 he became chairman of Illinois Senate’s Health and Human Service Committee.

·       He held assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations Environment and public works and Veteran’s Affairs through December 2006.

·       In January 2007 he took additional assignments with Health, Education, Labour and Pensions and Homeland Security and Government Affairs.

·       He also became the chairman of subcommittee on European Affairs.

·       As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia  and Africa .

·       He published a book: Dreams from my father  in 1995

Birth and Brought up

·       Born August 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

·       His mother was American  and father  from Kenya. They were divorced in the year 1964.

·       After the divorce from his bio- logical father his mother married an Indonesian student who graduated in geography in the year 1965 and in 1967 his mother migrated to Indonesia with him. 

·       From ages six to ten he attended local Indonesian language schools supplemented by English language

·       Until the age of ten he was brought up by his mother.

·       Since 1971 he was brought up by his maternal grandparents.

MITT ROMNEY

Brothers and Sisters! As below are salient features of Mitt Romney’s profile:

·       Mitt Romney was born on 12 March 1947.

·       He attended public elementary schools until the seventh grade, a traditional private boy’s preparatory school.

·       He attended Stanford University during the academic year of 1965 -66.

·       In July 1966 he left USA for thirty month to stay in France as Mormon missionary.

·       His father lost presidential campaign in the year 1968 and served as United States Secretary of Housing and Urban development in Richard Nixon’s cabinet.

·       He wanted to pursue a business career but his father advised him that a law degree would be valuable to his career even if he did not become a lawyer.

·       He enrolled in joint Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration four year program coordinated between Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School.

·       He joined Boston Consulting Group reasoning that working as a management consultant for a variety of companies would better prepare him for a future position as chief executive.

·       In 1977 he was hired by Bain & company a management consulting firm in Boston.

·       He became vice president of the firm in 1978 and earned the reputation among the best consultants

·       In 1984 he left Bain and company to confound the spin-off private equity investment firm Bain Capital.

·       Bain and Romney raised $37 billion in funds needed to start new operation which has seven employees. Romney held the titles of President and managing general partner.

·       He soon switched Bain Capital’s focus from start-ups to the relatively new business leveraged buyouts: Buying existing companies with money mostly borrowed from banking institutions using the newly bought companies’ assets as collateral, then taking steps to improve the companies’ value, and finally selling those companies once their value peaked.

·       From 1999 he served as the president of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics Games Organising committee.

·       His separation from Bain Capital concluded in early 2002. He transferred his ownership to other partners and negotiated an agreement that allowed him to receive a passive profit share as a retired partner in some Bain Capital entities, including buyout and investment funds. The private equity business continued to thrive, earning him millions of dollars in annual income.

·       During his business career, he held several positions in the local lay clergy. In 1977 he became a counsellor to the president of the Boston Stake. He served as bishop of the ward at Belmont and Massachusetts from 1981 to 1986.

·       In 1994 he lost the US Senate election against Ted Kennedy.

·       He sworn in as Governor of Massachusetts in January 2003.

·       He lost US Presidential Election campaign against John McCain in 2008.

·       He supported Troubled Assets Relief Programme under President Bush administration in response to late 2000s financial crisis. But he opposed the Stimulus Package of Present Obama during the automotive industry financial crisis of 2008 – 10.

·       Romney wrote a book: No Apology: The case for American Greatness and published in March 2010. In the book Romney writes of his personal beliefs in American exceptionalism and presents his economic and geopolitical views rather than anecdotes about his personal political life.

·       In 2012 he has won the nomination to run for the President of USA on behalf of Republican Party.

·       As a Governor of Massachusetts Romney helped develop and enact into law the Massachusetts Healthcare reform legislation, the first of its kind in the nation which provided near – universal health insurance access through state – level subsidies and individual mandates to purchase insurance.  But he opposed Healthcare Reform by President Obama and has on top of his agenda that he will repeal Healthcare Reforms should he will assume office of the President of USA.

QUALITIES AND ATTRIBUTES OF A POLITICIAN

Brothers and Sisters! Head of the state is like a father of nation. Just like a bio –logical father who cares and looks after all his children. The head of the state ought to care and look after all the inhabitants of the state irrespective of their faith, race, and nationality and otherwise. The people who come from abroad for a visit or otherwise are like guests and the head of the state is under obligation to devise policies where they are cared for and looked after in every respect.

Brothers and Sisters! The centre point of the constitution of the state is welfare of the people of the state which requires policies to be devised in respect of:

·       home affairs

·       foreign affairs

·       defence  of boundaries

·       legal jurisdiction

·       economic structure

·       social structure

·       etc.

Brothers and Sisters! Every element is a very vast field and the head of the state must have knowledge and experience, at least, to the extent that he is in position to draft an outline to devise policies which will be taken care of by his cabinet i.e. to draft the Bill taking every aspect into account before it is presented in the parliament for debate.

Brothers and Sisters! Second factor which is important for a head of state is he must have gone through the life span where he had been the victim of poverty, oppression, hard times, depression and also service to mankind. For example: a child born with silver spoon cannot feel the agony of being poor, oppressed and going through hard times.

Brothers and Sisters! Another factor which is the most important is that he must be honest, integrate, trustworthy and selfless.

COMPARISON OF PROFILES

Brothers and Sisters! In short, the comparison of the profiles of the two contests Barrack Hussain Obama and Mitt Romney depicts that Barrack Hussain Obama qualifies to be re – elected as President of the USA on the following grounds:

Knowledge

Brothers and Sisters! It is natural phenomenon that for a politician and statesman he should have comprehensive knowledge of legal jurisdiction as each and every aspect of life revolves around principles and rules and regulation.

Brothers and Sisters! The profile of Barrack Obama depicts that he acquired the knowledge by:

·       studying

·       editing university journal

·       teaching

·       working for law firms

·       serving three terms as Senator for Illinois Senate

·       serving one term as Senator for US Senate

·       etc.

Brothers and Sisters! Mitt Romney acquired knowledge by studying only and he did not work for any legal firm though he studied for law.

Observations

Brothers and Sisters!

·       Barrack Obama most of his life was in civil service and he earned a place being the President of USA.

·       Mitt Romney was born with silver spoon and his father served in President Nixon’s cabinet and earned a place in politics based on inheritance and wealth as he has been in business all his life. He did not work as an employee.

Brothers and Sisters! Knowledge of various fields develops a broad vision which takes every aspect of life into account while business vision is limited where the mind is always thinking about maximising profits and even the Moral issues are based on cost and benefit analysis. Brothers and Sisters! In this respect please consider the following statement of Mitt Romney when he was contesting for nomination in an answer to question about FEMA. Federal Emergency Management Agency:

Every time you have an occasion that takes from the federal government and send it back to the states that is the right direction. If you can go further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.

Instead of thinking in the federal budget what we should cut, we should ask the opposite. What should we keep? We should take all of what we’re doing at the federal level and say what are the things we’re doing that we don’t have to do and those things we have to stop doing. We are borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we are taking including disaster relief.

We can’t afford to do those things without jeopardising the future of our kids. It’s simply immoral in my view. For us to continue to back up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well we’ll be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.

Brothers and Sisters! FEMA is an agency of the US Department of Homeland Security where its primary purpose is to co-ordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resource of local and state authorities. The governor of the state must declare state of emergency and formally request from the President that FEMA and the federal government respond to the disaster.

Brothers and Sisters! Sandy hit New York and New Jersey where President Obama immediately reacted and visited all the affected areas and left the Presidential campaign. He was asked about the effect and impact on the Presidential campaign where he responded to the effect:

Presidential election will take care of itself. Right at this moment we have to deal with the disaster and people affected.

Brothers and Sisters! Mitt Romney was lending his hands to deal with the donations people were bringing in the form of goods. The media asked him question about his views about the disaster caused by Sandy in view of his views at the nomination mentioned above. As below are the copies of the video clips which speak themselves about the indifference of Mitt Romney:

Brothers and Sisters! Mitt Romney did not reply but thanking the donors:

Brothers and Sisters! As his non response was going to affect his rating in the Presidential Election he issued a statement subsequently:

Observation:

Brothers and Sisters! How a person can be trusted with the job of President of USA the most powerful man on earth who does not have any concern for the people of the state and gives priority to costs and not benefits?

EXPERIENCE

Brothers and Sisters! Barrack Obama has experienced facts of life being:

·       brought up by single mother and maternal parents

·       met his father only once when he was 10 years old

·       psychological effects as he was African American

·       lived with step father

·       faced hard times all his life

·       worked as a teacher

·       worked for the law firms

·       was in civil service where he toured all over the world

·       etc.

Brothers and Sisters! On the other hand Mitt Romney did not go through any hard times which can develop concern for the ordinary people:

·       he was born with silver spoon

·       his father was a politician and businessman

·       all his education expenses were paid for while Obama had to survive on Scholarships and student loans

Observation

Brothers and Sisters! Experience plays a great role in running the politics of the state which Mitt Romney lacks as compared with Barrack Obama.

TEMPERAMENT

Brothers and Sisters! Temperament plays a very important role in running the politics of the state.

Brothers and Sisters! The head of the state must be cool minded and must take every aspect into account before making a decision to be implemented.

Brothers and Sisters! Barrack Obama is cool minded on the following grounds:

·       He was inherited the economy where jobs were being lost, businesses were closing down; houses were re – possessed etc. With cool mind he and his team worked out a plan as to how to get the economy of out of recession and passed a Stimulus Package which resulted in lowering unemployment, new businesses, lowering the rate of foreclosures.

·       Due to the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq the image of USA was grossly damaged. With cool mind he made a plan and visited European, muslim countries in the first year of his presidency and assigned the job of repairing the damage to Hillary Clinton Secretary of State. The image of USA has been repaired to a certain extent.

Brothers and Sisters! GOP i.e. Republicans are party of aggression on the following grounds:

·       H W Bush lodged war on Iraq in 1990 while issue could be resolved diplomatically.

·       G W Bush lodged war on Afghanistan. He also lodged war on Iraq when the whole world was against the war and even UN did not pass the resolution.

·       John McCain had the agenda in 2008 to send more combat troops to Iraq and attack Iran

·       The Republicans always accused President Obama for not taking aggressive action against Iran, Syria and Libya.

·       Mitt Romney wants to increase funding for the defence by $2 trillion which is not being asked for. Why? He believes in Peace  by aggression. He wants to increase funding for the army but does not want to give any funds to FEMA.

Observation

Brothers and Sisters! Politicians are required to resolve the issues by diplomatic means and not by wars.

CONCLUSION

Brothers and Sisters! Trust is an element which is an utmost requirement to be part of the personality and character of the politician who is contesting for the President of the USA because he is the most powerful man on earth.

Brothers and Sisters! In view of the above analysis of the profiles of the two contestants it clearly reveals that Mitt Romney is not suitable for the post of President of USA as he is inexperienced, lack of knowledge, aggressive and not concerned for the American people. He showed his disconcern for the people who would vote for President Obama in the private fund raising meeting:

There are 47 per cent of the people who will vote for the President no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government who believe that they are victims, who believe that they are entitled to healthcare, to food, housing, you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they vote for this president no matter what.

And I mean the president starts off with 48, 49… he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty seven per cent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect (inaudible)

(Inaudible) that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people.

I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care of their lives. What I have to is convince the five to ten that are thoughtful, that look at one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotions, whether they like the guy or not.

Brothers and Sisters! Barrack Hussain Obama is cool minded and has devised economic policies where the economy is coming out of recession taking its natural course and repaired damage to USA in the eyes of the world to a certain extent while Mitt Romney is heading for a business war with China even though USA is in debt since the times of President GW Bush.

LAST WORD

Brothers and Sisters! It is in the interest of America  and the world that Barrack Hussain Obama  should be re – elected as President of USA .
